Marie was born May 10, 1905 in Visalia, Tulare Co. CA. Her father was Clement Emery Hinds "Pete" of Exeter, Tulare Co., CA and her mother was Anna Margaret Clark of San Jose, Santa Clara Co., CA. When Marie was still a young child they moved permanently to Atwater where he once set up a butchering business. In Atwater, the family first lived on the Main St. just two doors down from the butcher shop
While still very young, her parents purchased an abandoned school house, cut it apart and moved the two parts to the lot we all knew on First Street in Atwater.
In 1913, Marie was struck with polio at the age of seven years and walked with crutches or with a cane and leg braces all her life - eventually ending up in a wheelchair in her later years. She was Merced County's first known polio victim.
She was clever at schoolwork and was accepted at San Jose State. She attended San Jose for three days (with her sister, Mildred) but could not handle the stairs and the distances with her crutches. She returned to Atwater where she taught piano to the local children for free and was one of the local telephone operators. Marie also played the piano for the local silent movies
Harold and Marie were married Sep 2, 1930 in a double wedding in Ashland Oregon together with John Colburn (no relation) and Aileen Hinds, Marie's older sister.
