Dec. 30, 1858 he married Hannah Sophia Ballou, daughter of Levi and Mary Marble Ballou. About this time he and his brother Hezekiah undertook an agency for the sale of reapers.
Erastus was poetic, artistic and an inventor. After his wife died, he was left with three small children. Erastus and his children were taken in by his mother. When his health begin to fail, he went to Tennessee taking along his son Herbert. They lived with Erastus' sister Mrs. Miranda Brown.
He died at his sister's home 5-28-1872 and was buried there. A few years later he was removed to the Wheaton Cemetery in DuPage County, IL.
