(There is a discrepancy for the last name of Mattie Elizabeth. The grave marker shows that her last name is PAINE; however, her death certificate states that her last name was PHILLIPS.)


OBITUARY

Mrs. Mattie Phillips PAINE of Canadian passed away on February 2, 1952 in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Clell (Grace) OWSLEY, at Amarillo.

She had been in poor health for the past two years and had been in Amarillo since December 27, spending some time in the hospital there and the balance of the time with her daughter.

Mrs. PAINE was born at Sulphur, Oklahoma, on October 14,1895. She had been a resident of Canadian since 1906 and was engaged in the cafe business in Canadian for several years.

She is survived by her husband, Sam V. PAINE of Canadian; by her daughter, Mrs. Grace OWSLEY, daughter of John McCLURE of Canadian; by a half-brother, Henry POFF of Wichita; by three grandchildren, Mrs. Earlene HODGES of Amarillo and John and Tony BRIGGS of Canadian; and by four great grandchildren, Dannie, Linda, Cell and Jimmy HODGES.

She was always a good wife, mother and friend.

Funeral services were held in the chapel of the Stickley funeral home, with the Rev. Taft Holloway, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating.

Burial was made in the Canadian Cemetery where her father, W. A. POFF, a brother, Carroll POFF, a daughter, Mrs. Clarence (Verna Mae) BRIGGS, two sons, 17 year old Buddy McCLURE and another who died in infancy, and a former husband, Henry PHILLIPS were all laid to rest.

Pallbearers were Frank CAIN, J. C. CAIN, Paul MALCOM, G. L. ORR, N. E. JOHNSON and Leon MAUPIN.
