Augustus Freehafer was born 6 February 1815 in Heidelberg Township,Berks County, Pennsylvania. He married Sophia Briner, daughter of Frederick Briner and Anna Maria Reicheldoerfler, 15 December 1839 in Wayne County, Ohio. Augustus died 22 August 1888 in Huntington County, Indiana while visiting relatives. He lived in South Bend, Indiana and his body was taken back there for burial. Augustus Freehafer and his wife, Sophia Briner, had six known children: Lydia Freehafer married Samuel Shock, Catherine "Kate" Freehafer married Peter Newman, George W. Freehafer married Sarah J. Steffey, John H. Freehafer married Sarah Catherine Ritchie, Mary E. Freehafer married George C. Fisher and Joseph Briner Freehafer married Alice Wright.
