James Bernard Wood, age 85, known lovingly to his friends and family as Woody, was welcomed to his eternal home on Friday, October 12, 2012. Woody was born on May 21, 1927 in Milledgeville, Georgia to Jordan B. Wood and Evie Dunn Wood.

James spent his childhood in the beautiful state of Georgia, enjoying outdoor activities such as hunting and fishing; activities that he continued to enjoy well into his adulthood. He rarely missed an opportunity to explore and roam the country side; he loved the fresh air that accompanied outdoor recreation and spent many hours with friends catching fish for big fish fries for all to enjoy at family gatherings.

As a young man, his roaming spirit led him to a career in the military, first in the United States Army, at age 18, serving abroad in Germany and France. On September 6, 1945, Woody joined the United States Air Force and was eventually stationed at Bergstrom Air Force Base in Austin, Texas. He retired from military life as Staff Seargeant on September 30, 1965, and went to work for the Austin Police Department where he worked for many years in the property management department.

It was during his career at Bergstrom that he met his future bride, Julia, "Judy," Mae Bridwell. They married July 16, 1958. During their marriage, they were stationed several places, but the Philippian Islands remained their favorite assignment. Judy loved the sunny beaches and Woody enjoyed the fresh air, the fishing opportunities and combing the beaches for sea treasures. He loved looking for unusual sea shells.

During his life, Woody was very active in the work of the Masonic Lodge. On August 31, 2012, he was honored by receiving his Fifty Year Masonic Pin.
This recognition was a source of great pride for him and he immensely appreciated the caring concern and beautiful execution of the ceremony by his Masonic Brothers. He held many positions during his fifty years as a Mason. He served as Past Patron of Creedmoor Eastern Star Chapter OES; Masonic Grand Lodge Past District Deputy; he held two positions as Junior Warden; twice he served as Worshipful Master; once as Senior Warden; once as Senior Deacon; twice as Junior Deacon; once as Senior Steward, and once as Junior Steward. He was also a member of the Shriners, serving on the motorcycle patrol.

His love of the Lord was evident in his life. He worked to promote goodness by helping others; not only through the Masonic work he did, but in the churches he attended. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Elgin, Texas. He was an active member of his Sunday School Class and served his church as greeter, and worked on all types of maintenance projects. To his credit, he helped build five churches in and around the Elgin area.

After his retirement, Woody and Judy built a home on several acres of land in Elgin where he raised donkeys, cattle, and catfish in his large fishing tank. Life was good to James Bernard Wood. He enjoyed his careers, his wife, his family, his pets, his hobbies and his friends. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He was a good man.

Woody is preceded in death by his mother and father, Jordan and Evie Wood; two brothers, Herman and Owen Wood, and his two sisters, Ruby Wood Haskins and Idaleen Wood Beckum.

He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, Mr. Wood's family asks for you to consider donating to the Shriners' Crippled Children's Fund or to the Shriners Children's Burn Hospital.

A special Thank You is sent to all the staff and medical professionals who took such loving care of Woody during his stay at The South Park Meadows Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center. Your sincere kindness in caring for him was a blessing not only to him but to all his family members. You are all sincerely appreciated.
