Nancy is the oldest of 3 illegitimate daughters of Rachel Branch prior to her marriage to John Emmett Henry. Her father is said to be Rev. John "Pappy" Wilkes, so named due to the number of children he fathered. It is said that the 3 girls, Nancy, Annie Eliza and Charity, when younger, went by whichever last name suited them, either Branch or Wilkes. Pappy married Rachel's younger sister Charity "Oud" Branch. Pappy's brother David married Rachel's older sister, Martha Patricia "Pattie" Branch.
