Harley H. Layton
Harley Hinman Layton, 75, Olympia, Wash., died Feb. 12 at St. Peter Hospital in Olympia.
Born May 25, 1915, in Sheridan, Wyo. to Howard and Clara Belle Layton, he attended school in Sheridan and played on the high school baseball team.
He enlisted in the Navy and served from 1942 to 1945. He was stationed in Hawaii and served as an electrician's mate on the high-speed transport, USS Cavallaro APD-128 in the Pacific in World War ll and was wounded in action.
He married M. Ruth Schlottmann on Oct. 17, 1947, in Olympia.
Mr. Layton worked on ranches, and as a fire lookout for the Civilian Conservation Corps in Wyoming, foreman at Mount Rainier Ordnance Depot, bus driver for the Olympia school district, maintenance supervisor for Olympia and Lacey, Wash. parks departments and landscape business owner.
He helped organize the Olympia Softball Association, where he was active as a player and coach for many years. He enjoyed family activities, gardening, and sports.
Survivors include his wife of Olympia; two daughters, Clara Marie Jacobson and Christie Vintilo, both of Olympia; two sisters, Lila Reinhart, Puyallup, Wash., and Beverly Krembs; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Services will be held Feb. 16 at Olympic Memorial Gardens, Tumwater, Wash. Memorials may benefit South Union Church of God or donor's choice.
Arrangements were with Olympic Memorial Funeral Home, Tumwater.
