He was the son of William A Fitzpatrick and second wife Phoebe Ruddell of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. William had first married to Mary M McCullagh Fitzpatrick, and had re-married after her passing.

Arthur had siblings Charles, William, George, and Robert 'Jack' Fitzpatrick. He attended Germantown High School and Temple University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He first married Julia Clark Jones in 1946, however they later divorced. He married second to Marjorie Hilda Austin.

He enlisted in the Air Corps 11 March 1942 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He had completed four years of high school.

As the Pilot, he survived the crash landing of B-24J #42-73390 which was forced during a training mission at March Field CA, 1 February 1944. There were six survivors and four fatalities. The crew members were~

He later flew 35 missions in the Pacific and finished the war in the 6th Emergency Rescue Squadron flying 'Dumbo' missions in the OA-10 and SB-17G.
