An article on Capt. George W. Stewart can be found in "The Sentinel News, Shelbyville, KY. May 14, 1981." From this article it states that George & his son, John Henry commanded the "Uncle Sam" under Union orders."Uncle Sam" was owned by G.W. Stewart and sold to the U.S. government. It was fitted with guns and called the "Black Hawk" after it was sold. It was used during the Civil War by U.S. Grant as his flagship.

He was buried in New Albany, IN. in Fairview Cemetery, but his monument is in his family plot in Grove Hill Cemetery. He was moved there later from Fairview. There was no marker put up at Fairview, only from cemetery & funeral records. He died of stomach cancer.
