FATHER OF BERNE WOMAN IS DEAD

FUNERAL AT PORTLAND SUNDAY FOR WALTER J. DARBY

Walter J. Darby, 78, of 610 W. Arch St., Portland, died at 8:43 a.m. Thursday at the Jay County Hospital. He had been ill for two weeks and had undergone surgery a week ago.

Funeral services for Mr. Darby, in recent years the elevator operator at the Jay County Courthouse, will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the William son Funeral Home. Rev. Garth Shepherd of Kokomo will officiate and interment will be in Green Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home.

Mr. Darby was born on Oct. 8, 1877, the son of Silas and Laura (Stratton) Darby. He was first married to Minnie Nogle, who died in June 1920. On Aug. 12, 1939, he was married to Nancy Orr Welch, who survives.

Also surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Charles Beeler of near Portland, Mrs. Rex McManus of Mobile, Ala., Mrs. Howard Dennis of Hicksville, O., and Mrs. Myron J. Clauser of Berne; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Glen Shirk of Portland; two sons, Robert and Charles Darby, both of near Portland (rest is missing)
