A copy of the Steel Family Bible shows Frank was born to William Henry STEEL (surname also found spelled STEELE) and Adaline C. COOK (maiden name also found spelled KOCH).
"Franklin Bland, 2 May 1974; departed this life 29 Jul. 1964."
[NOTE: William, also know as Henry, was born in Missouri, and fought in the Civil War in Company A, 5th Kansas Volunteer Cavalry. Adaline's middle name was Cinderella, and she was born in Pennsylvania.]

William, Adaline and four children, Andrew Louis, Mary Caroline, Ruth Genevia and Adaline Willimine, all moved to California, from Marshall County, Kansas, in the Spring of 1871. During the family's residence in California, Frank was born, 2 May 1874, possibly in Compton, Los Angeles County. In about 1876, or 1877, the family moved to Wasco County, Oregon, to what is now The Dalles. William Henry Steel was a farmer and a gold miner, with mining interests in Wheeler County. The 1880 census for Oregon shows Franklin B. STEEL as age 6, born in California. In the 1900 census, Frank is listed as a lodger, in Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon, at age 26, single, born in California, May 1874, and his occupation was listed as a miner.

Frank's first marriage was to Minnie STIDHAM, on 18 October 1904, and this record can be found in Wheeler County, Oregon. Three children were born to this marriage: Oza, Arline and Fred Frank. This marriage ended in divorce. Frank's second marriage was to Ella Lee HARGROVE. Ella's obituary, in the Record Courier, of Baker, says she and Frank were married in Baker on 8 December 1925. Her marriage to Frank wasn't her first marriage. Some places Frank and Ella lived were in Pleasant Valley, Durkee and Baker, now called Baker City. Occupations for Frank have been farmer, miner and logger. Ella died 25 May 1955.

The WW1 Draft Registration lists Frank STEELE as age 44, born 2 May 1874, occupation of logger, employed by the East Oregon Lumber Co., of Enterprise, Oregon. The card was dated 12 Sept. 1918.

In 1930 Frank and Ella are living in Durkee, Baker County, Oregon, and his occupation is listed as a farmer.

Besides the siblings listed above, Frank had a brother, William Thomas Steel, born in California in 1872, and a sister Arlene Geraldine (STEEL) CAMPBELL, born in 1886, in Wasco County, Oregon. Arlie was my grandmother. Frank's parents and siblings are buried in The Dalles.

I remember Frank being a tall, well built man, with a ready smile and large hands. I saw him a couple of times when he visited my grandma in The Dalles.

Frank's wife, Ella, is also buried at Mount Hope Cemetery, in the Masonic Park section, Lot 74, Grave 3.
