Mary Caroline STEEL was the daughter of William Henry STEEL and Adaline Cinderella (COOK) STEEL. Mary was born in the area of northeastern Kansas. At about age 3 1/2, in 1871, her parents, an older brother and two younger sisters, moved West by wagon train to California. About 5-6 years later the family, which now included two more boys, moved to Oregon, settling in Wasco County. They lived just south of what is now The Dalles, and later moved into the city.

Mary never married. She died about 4 months before her 23rd birthday. Short newspaper articles in the newspapers of Times-Mountaineer, April 7th and 8th, and in The Wasco County Sun, April 9th, 1890, said Miss Mary Steel, of Five Mile, had been ill for several months, and had died Sunday, April 6th at 12 o'clock. Her funeral took place at the Methodist church at 11 o'clock Tuesday, April 8th and was largely attended by friends and family.

Mary is buried in the family plot with her parents and all but one of her brothers, Frank Bland STEEL, who is buried in Baker City, Oregon. The family plot is in the G.A.R. section of the Odd Fellows IOOF Cemetery.

The 1880 Federal census for Dalles Precinct, Wasco County, Oregon, page 5A, E.D. 121, Dwelling and Family #54, shows Mary at 12 years old, with her parents, 3 brothers, two sisters and her grandmother, Polly.

The surname has also been found spelled STEELE.
