Father Ross was a unique individual, who was so loved by thousands. He was my best friend for years.........we would go to lunch in my corvette, and he would wear blue jeans....and his collar.....and he would say "Do you think anyone will know I'm a priest?" He reminded me of Bing Crosby, in the way he was so skinny, and sang all the time...........bub, bub,bub bub...........
If I had to describe him, he was like the pied piper.........always gathering children. I will forever, be touched and changed by knowing this person.

Father Raymond (Ray) Ross

Father Raymond (Ray) Ross, C.M. entered into eternal life on Sept. 12, 2010, at the age of 89. He died at St. Mary's of the Barrens in Perryville, Mo., on the same ground where he had entered the Congregation of the Mission Western Province 70 years, four months, and 14 days prior. He had served as a priest for 62 years at the time of his death.

Father Ross rested in state in the Mary Mother of God Chapel of the Vincentian Residence on Wednesday, Sept. 15, after 5:30 p.m. Visitation will continued on Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010, until time of Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m., in the Mary Mother of God Chapel. Burial is in the Vincentian Cemetery. Miller Family Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Fr. Ross was born in Amboy, on Aug. 25, 1921, one of 10 children of the late Roy and Nelli (Lenihan) Ross.

Survivors include two sisters, Rita Marine of Rock Falls, and Dolores Ross of Amboy; and many nieces and nephews.

Fr. Ross was continually in school from 1927 through 1954. He attended St. Ann School in Amboy, and then St. Vincent's College (high school) Seminary in Cape Girardeau, Mo. He entered the novitiate of the Vincentians at St. Mary's of the Barrens in 1940 where he also studied philosophy and theology. After his ordination as a priest in 1948, Fr. Ross enrolled at DePaul University in Chicago where he earned a master's degree in Latin in 1954. While studying Latin, Fr. Ross also taught at DePaul Academy, the first of many assignments as a teacher of Latin and administrator in high school and college seminaries.

After graduation from DePaul University, Fr. Ross was assigned to his alma mater in Cape Girardeau where he served for five years. This was followed by assignments at St. John's seminary in Kansas City, Mo., St. Vincent DePaul Seminary in Lemont, Cardinal Glennon College in St. Louis, Mo., and Queen of Angels Seminary in San Fernando, Calif. From 1971 - 1984 he had a joint appointment teaching at both St. Louis Prep Seminary and Cardinal Glennon College in St. Louis. He completed his teaching career at DePaul University in 1988.

Following his many years in the classroom, Fr. Ross was called to parish ministry. He served from 1988 - 2003 at St. Catherine Laboure Parish in St. Louis (Sappington).

It is with thankful hearts that generations of seminarians and thousands of parishioners as well as all the Vincentians of the Western Province pray that the angels will greet Fr. Ross at Heaven's gate and the martyrs will seat him at the table of the eternal feast of the Lamb. May he rest in peace.
