Rutha America AKINS-BOWERS was dtr/o John W. AKINS [a/k/a AKENS] and Nancy J. DANIEL of Union and Hall Cos., GA. Her parents avoided the Civil War by travelling in a covered wagon from GA to TN to IL and back down to Winston Co., AL visiting DANIEL kin. Ruth was born in TN. Her parents returned to Union Co. in 1878 when her grandfather, Josiah Lafayette DANIEL, Sr. died. The next year in 1879, she married EB BOWERS in Union Co., GA while her parents settled in Hall Co., GA. Ruth and E.B. had 10 children together and lived on a large farm in Ivy Log. She died suddenly from complications of gall bladder surgery in 1910. EB in 1916 purchased The Old Central Hotel in downtown Blue Ridge, GA. My Mama, their granddtr, lived with him, attended Fannin Elementary until his death a decade later.

Only their son, Luther Edgar BOWERS, stayed in the area and farmed in Morganton. Most of the rest of their children headed to OH, IL and MI to work the factories during The Great Depression having sold their interests in the Hotel to their step-mother, Louise Frances "Miss Lou" NICHOLS-CRAWFORD-BOWERS. The hotel catered to the railroad men but ran a beautiful dining room with linen tablecloths and cut crystal dishes for local residents. Many of the railroad men were transferred in the 1930's to Jacksonville, FL where CSX is headquartered. Miss Lou sold the hotel and retired in Bakersfield, California with her CRAWFORD children and grandchildren.
