The second of five children born to Professor Joseph C. Watkins and his wife, Bettie Gamble Alderson Watkins. Her father was an educator and moved the family to Ennis from Missouri when he became Superintendent of schools in Ennis. She married Hix McCanless in 1898 and they were blessed with three children. Mary died suddenly after a 14 hour illness. Her grave, with the inscriptions on her tombstone, is an indication as to how deeply her family felt their loss.
