Mary Beth was born in Adaza, Iowa to Laura Ethel (Moon) and Ora E. Atherton. She graduated from Bondurant High School in 1936. In July of 1950 she married Francis Max Pritchard. Mary Beth worked as a benefits supervisor for IPERS for 30 years, retiring in 1980.
Mary Beth was a very active and much-loved member of Christ United Methodist Church. She sang in the choir, helped organize numerous rummage sales, bake sales and other church events. Her church family and her faith were very important to her.
Mary Beth loved spending time with her family. She enjoyed keeping up on the news, working crossword puzzles and passing along funny jokes. She loved writing poetry and prose in her earlier years and enjoyed reading both. Mary Beth enjoyed all around her and had a variety of interests.
Survivors include her sons, Donald (Judy) Steele of Des Moines, Douglas (Linda) Steele of Minburn, Kevin (Susan) Pritchard of Kansas City, MO, a step-daughter Pat (Bill) Willis of Perry; seven grandchildren (including two step grandchildren); one great grandchild; and her sisters, Orma Cornwell of Redding, CA, Peg Brain of Des Moines and Jeri (Jerry) Brown from Bondurant. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Max, her son, Dennis Steele and sisters, Bonnie Hickey and Lucille Pollock.
Mary Beth will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew her. She was a loving, generous, caring, upbeat person who was very accepting of everyone she met.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 pm Sunday at Westover Chapel. The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to her church, Christ United Methodist Church in Des Moines or a charity of the donor's choosing.
