He immigrated to the United States in 1903, arriving at the Port of New York on 1 April aboard the SS Kaiser Wilhelm Der Grosse.
He married Sophie Wahl in Menno, South Dakota on 10 January 1907. Together they had six children: Frederick, Gustoph, Lydia, Emilia, Magdalena and Theodore.
Sophie died in December of 1915.
Karl immigrated to Canada in 1917 after he adopted his children out to family and neighbors: Fred and Emilia were fostered by John and Barbara (Wahl - Sophie's sister) Sandmeier; Lydia was adopted by Jacob H. and Eva (Kurle) Eisenbeisz; Gus lived with Frank and Christina Oster; Magdalena was renamed Evelyn by her adoptive parents, Reinhold and Tillie Uttke; and Ted, an infant at the time, was adopted by Christ and Maria (Schick) Sandmeier. All but Evelyn, who lived in Ellendale, ND, grew up in same area in South Dakota and attended the same country school.
Karl married Lydia Schmitke in 1923. They lived in Lashburn, Saskatchewan, Canada, and together they had 8 children: Charles, Reuben, Ben, John, Esther, Ruth, Rose, Edna.
In the very early 1950s, at the insistence of his second wife, Karl and his second family went to South Dakota to visit the grown children from his first family.
Shortly after, Karl died at the age of 69.
