Major General James M. Masters Sr. (center) and Major General Herman Nickerson welcome retired Lieutenant General Lewis 'Chesty' Puller, the most decorated U.S. Marine in history, to Camp Pendleton in 1962.

At the time, Masters was base commander at Camp Pendleton and Nickerson was 1st Marine Division commander. Puller retired in 1955 for health reasons.
