Barton Helliwell was the son of William and Evina (Nuttall) Helliwell. His parents were from England. They moved to Winsted County, Minnesota, USA, then settled around 1893 in Yoncalla, Douglas County, Oregon. The siblings of Barton were: Ernest, Clara (Daughterty), Frank, Sidney, Albert, Ruth and Lena (Hartley). As young men, Barton and his brother Sidney went to business school in San Francisco, then returned to Douglas County.

Barton and his brothers were in various businesses: a "resort", Bowswell Springs, near Yoncalla and the People's Supply Co. Barton also worked at a bank in Yoncalla. Toward the end of his working life, he served as Douglas County Deputy Clerk under Roy Agee.

He was married to Mabel C. Mahn (1883-1962). They divorced but remained friends. They had one son, Robert, born in 1913, who married Lois Irving. Barton had two grandsons, Robin and Roger.

Barton was quite the outdoors-man. He loved to fish, hunt, philosophize and write poetry. He belonged to the Presbyterian Church, the Laurel Masonic Lodge and the Roseburg Glee Club. He spent his later years in Glide, OR. He is buried next to Glide friends, Carl V. Trued and Helen C. Glenn. This is a poem by Barton Helliwell:

Haunting Little River Falls

The Water Ousel nests by Little River Falls,
A blue Grouse is hootin' on the hill:
Dogwoods are bloomin' where the Hermit Thrush calls,
And the singin' of the river haunts me still.
