Clyde was the ninth of nine children born to Perry Eugene Edgar and his second wife, Mary Lorena Lovelady. He was born and raised in Yoakum where his father owned a general store. In 1935, he was married to Mary Elizabeth "Martha" Collett, and he was a devoted, loving husband until his death caused by cancer in 1976. They had one child (a daughter), two granddaughters, and a grandson, all of whom are still living and to whom he and Martha were devoted.
