John Alford was the eldest son of William and Dulcena Newton Freeman.

He married Priscilla Ledford on Sep. 14, 1889 in Cleveland County, North Carolina, and their marriage produced four daughters (Lusabel, Hettie Sue, Polly, and Jackie) and six sons (Roy, Mack, Dewey, Odell, Norris, and Woodrow). Their second oldest daughter, Hettie Sue Freeman Burgin Conley, was my great-grandmother.

He was a cobbler and operated a shoe repair shop in Spindale, NC with his sons, Odell, Norris, and Woodrow.
