John was probably born in Delaware Co., Indiana. He moved with his parents to Marion Co., Indiana in 1830. He married Margaret Barnhill in Marion County on 13 March 1834 and purchased a farm there and began a family. In 1839 John and Margaret and three small children pulled up stakes and came to Clay County where they purchased land on the east and west sides of Cooley Lake. The Elitzer cemetery is located directly behind the Cruse farm and I believe John was buried here when he died in 1850 and is buried under one of the many unnamed field stones in the cemetery.
