Thomas came to Dallas County in December 1845. When he began teaching the following spring in Webb's Chapel, he was the first person to teach school in Dallas County.

Before the Civil War Thomas was twice elected assessor and collector of the state and county taxes, and during the war he was appointed war tax collector for Dallas County.

He was survived by his two sons, Ben H. and Jesse, and two daugthers, Mrs. J. S. Dowell and Mrs. John S. Hughes.
