"William Hershell Hamby, 83, of Monroe, died Sept. 7. 2003.

"A native of Morgan County, he was the son of the late Thomas H. and Fannie Leveritt Hamby. The husband of the late Martha Parham Hamby, he was retired from the Monroe-Walton Mill and was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of St. Stephen United Methodist Church. He was a 50 year member of the American Legion.

"He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law: Richard and Nelma Hamby of Social Circle and Phil and Shirley Hamby of Monroe; 5 grandchildren, 7 great-grand-children, nieces and nephews.

"Arthur Bowick, Inc. Funeral Directors, Monroe [was] in charge of arrangements."
