Mary Curtis Campbell was born in Buchanan County, Iowa to Lora Dexter and Eliza Martin Curtis. A brother, Wilbur Lora, was born there also. Because of the father's health, the family moved to Salina-Batavia, Kansas area after 1870. Then, in 1874 they moved to Saguache County, Colorado in the San Luis Valley, next to the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Another brother, George Henry, was born in Saguache.

She married the next door neighbor, Horace Campbell, in 1880 when she was 16 years old and he was 33. He was a muleskinner who hauled wagons of supplies from Golden to Leadville before the railroads were constructed, then he started a cattle ranch. He was a large land owner and also treasurer of Saguache County. They moved to Roseburg, Oregon in 1898. They lived on West Harvard Avenue (later known as the Sig Fett house) and also operated a 1,500-acre cattle ranch at Rice Hill, north of Roseburg. She belonged to the Baptist Church.

They had 7 children: James Perry, Myrtle (Neuner), Frances Ellen (Noland), Cora Alice (Duncan), Paula Mary (Strong), Harry Lora, and Helen Curtis (Leake, Glenn). Two of the children, "Ped" and "Fanny" returned to Saguache, Colorado to live.
