Grandma Hook was a hard worker throughout her life. She always found a way to help, whether it was selling a quilt, or cooking for the jail. She lost her hearing shortly after she and Egbert were married from a treatment to ease the pain of a severe ear infection. She never heard the sound of her children's or grandchildren's voices but was a huge presence in their lives nonetheless. I grew up hearing about her as if she was just in the next room, even though she died when I was just 2.
