Charles (went by Carl) Ried (often seen as Reid or Reed) was the fifteenth of seventeen known children of Jacob Ried (1735-1819) and Elisabeth Barbara Rominger Ried (1741-1829), who married 14 Dec 1760 at Broad Bay, Lincoln County, Maine.

Carl married Elizabeth Vogler (1791-1859) on 11 Nov 1808 at Stokes (now Forsyth) County, North Carolina. Carl was a lifelong farmer in the vicinity of the Moravian Community of Friedland (south-east of present-day Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina). Carl and Elizabeth were the parents of nine known children, namely:

1. George Ried (1809-1847)
2. Anna Maria Ried (1812-???) (did she marry Friedrich Alexander Schneider?)
4. Christian Emanuel Reed (1814-1894) (or 1817-1875 and the 1814-1894 is for another Christian Reed?; or 1817-1825?)
4. Johann (John) Rudolph Reed (1815-1883)
5. Philipina Matilda Ried (1820-1826)
6. Elizabeth (Elisa or Eliza) Barbara Ried Kinnamon (1823-1865)
7. Florina Reid (1826-1905)
8. Anna (Nancy) Belinda Reed Osborn (1829-1904)
9. Charles Augustus Reed (1833-1921)
