Jacob Ried (often seen as Reid or Reed) was the son of Johann Georg Ried (c1708-1776) and Mary Magdalena Eichorn (1712-1771) who married in Germany and emigrated to America in 1752, settling at Broad Bay (now Waldoboro), Lincoln County, Maine where both died. Jacob was born at Langensteinbach, Baden-Durlach (now Karlsbad-Langensteinbach, Baden-Würtemburg), Germany.

It is assumed that Jacob died at Friedland, present day Forsyth County, North Carolina, or perhaps across the county border in Davidson County.

Jacob married Elisabeth Barbara Rominger (1741-1829) on 14 Dec 1760 at Broad Bay, Lincoln County, Maine. Jacob and Elisabeth had their first seven children in Maine, before moving to the Moravian community of Friedland, south-east of present-day Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina in c1770 and then having their last ten children.

Jacob and Elisabeth were thus the parents of seventeen known children, namely:

1. George Michael Ried (1761-1771)
2. Johannes Ried (1763-p1785)
3. David Ried (1764-1785)
4. Daniel Ried (c1765-c1770)
5. Elizabeth Reid Schneider (1767-1801)
6. Magdalena Reid (1768-1771)
7. Friedrich Reid (1770-1781)
8. Sophia Salome Ried (1771-1775)
9. George Ried (1773-1782)
10. Jacob Ried 1774-1843)
11. Christina Magdalena Ried (1776-1778)
12. Philip Martin Ried (1778-1822)
13. Catherina Reid Nissen (1779-1808)
14. Johann Samuel Ried (1782-1849)
15. Charles (Carl) Reid (1783-1867)
16. Christian Ludwig (Lewis) Reed (1785-1875)
17. Matthias Reed (1789-1843)
