Rear Admiral William Adger Jr., United States Navy (retired) died on July, 23, 2001, at Westminster-Canterbury in Virginia Beach, Virginia. His wife of 39 years, Marie Spence Moffett, died in 1996. The Moffetts had lived in the Tidewater area since 1960.

He was the son of Jeanette Whitton Moffett and Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Rear Admiral William A. Moffett. The elder Moffett was a pioneer in Naval Aviation and was known as the ''Father of Naval Aviation.''

Rear Admiral Moffett Jr. graduated from the Naval Academy in 1930. He became a Naval Aviator in 1932 and was eventually qualified to fly more than 100 types of aircraft, from biplanes to jet. Rear Admiral Moffett's World War II decorations include the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal for combat action n the Guadalcanal area while in command of the Navy's first Heavy Bomber Squadron, VB-101.

Rear Admiral Moffett survived his five siblings, Janet Mark, Anna Beverly Mohan, Margaret Elizabeth Moffett, George Hall Moffett and Charles Simonton Moffett. His marriages to Margaret McNeale Moncure and Maude Montgomery ended in divorce.

Survivors include his son by Margaret McNeale Moncure, William A. Moffett III, Colonel, United States Marine Corps Reserve (Ret.) and his wife, Lynn Carli Moffett; four grandchildren, William A. IV, Hilary, Meredith and Alexander Moffett and one great-granddaughter, Zoe Moffett.

Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at 3 p.m. August 15. Memorial gifts may be sent to the First Presbyterian Church, 300 36th St., Virginia Beach, VA 23451.
