PERRY CENTER

J. Edward Chappel

J. Edward Chappel, whose death last Thursday morning was briefly noted in these columns last week, died at Warsaw hospital after only a few hours illness with heart trouble.

James Edward Chappel, son of Abner and Martha Booth Chappel, was born March 31, 1861, at Burke Hill, on the farm where Glen Morris now resides. Forty six years ago the family moved to Warsaw, where he had lived until March, 1923, when he moved to his late home on West street, Perry Center. His only brother, Arthur, died in young manhood. After his father's death in 1906, he cared for his invalid mother until her death in July, 1913. Since then he had lived alone.

Mr. Chappel was a great reader and had one of the finest libraries in this section.

He was also an authority on botany and known as a lover of flowers, which seemed to spring up at his touch. A great many people enjoyed his gardens, which contained choice specimens from field and woods, as well as great varieties of cultivated flowers.

He was a quiet, kindly man, known best by his close neighbors and relatives. Cousins are the only survivors.

Funeral services were held at the home Saturday afternoon at 2.30, Rev. B. D. Merriam officiating. Burial was in the family lot at Prospect Hill Cemetery. Services at the grave were conducted by the Warsaw Masonic lodge, of which he had been a member a great many years.
