Margaret Ann "Annie" Acker Gates was the daughter of Jackson B. Acker and Margaret Lucinda Crime. She is the granddaughter of Albert H. Acker and Rachel Herring.

Annie was born in 1850 and raised in the Springhill Community of Pickens County, Alabama near Carrollton. In 1872 she married Frank Obediah Gates, a local merchant. Annie and Frank had three daughters, but two died as children. In 1873 they had their third daughter, Lillian Alma Gates, in the same year Annie's father died. Annie and her family lived in Springhill for many years and then for a time in Brooksville, Mississippi where she and Frank provided a home for her widowed mother, Lucinda, and her three young orphaned nieces, Lorado Bryan, Martha Phay, and Maggie Bryan, daughters of her late sister Jo Acker Bryan. Later in the 1920s she and Frank moved to Ennis, Texas and resided there for two decades.

She passed away at the age of 87 in 1938, out living all her daughters. She was survived by her husband Frank and two of her nieces - Martha Phay Bryan and Maggie Bryan Adams.
