She was born May 16, 1920 to Hugo and Matilda Krebill Lowenberg on their farm near Donnellson, Iowa. Iola attended school in Donnellson where she graduated from high school in 1938. After graduation, she worked at the Farm Bureau. Then, with encouragement from an aunt and uncle living in California, she worked for a time as a comptometer operator in Gardena, California. After returning to Donnellson, she worked at Sheaffer Pen Company in Fort Madison. On June 2, 1946, she married Victor Spohnheimer at Zion Memnonite Church, in Donnellson, After their marriage, she devoted herself to making a home and raising their family. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, sewing, and sharing her skills in those areas. Iola was a lifelong member of Zion Mennonite Church where she had been a Sunday school teacher and served on various committees.
Survivors include 2 daughters: Sandra (David) Petersen of Altoona, Iowa, and Mary Spohnheimer of Donnellson; 1 son John (Merry) Spohnheimer of Carrollton, Texas; 6 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren; 2 sisters: Orien Lowenberg of Donnellson, and Maurine Krebill of Donnellson; 1 brother: Don Lowenberg of Hot Springs, Arkansas, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by per parents and her husband, Victor, on Sept. 20, 2010. She was a member of the Zion Mennonite Church.
Her body was cremated and burial will be in the Zion Mennonite Cemetery, near Donnellson.
