Georgetown, SC, June 30, 1952.

A Georgetown youth was swept to sea off the north end of Pawley's Island this afternoon and drowned.

Coroner John A. Broach identified him as Herbert James Michau, 15, a native of the Oceda setion of Georgetown County. A coroner's jury was empanelled and gave a verdict of accidental drowning, Mr. Broach said.

The dead boy's brother, Lee Michau, said they had been wading together, when they stepped into deep water. A current swept them beyond their depth. Lee was able to make shallow water, but Herbert was swept to sea. His body was recovered an hour later by searchers.

Artifical respiration was attempted for nearly two hours by Georgetown Policeman E. A. Richburg Jr., Woodie Brooks of Andrews, Adlai Bourne of Georgetown, and two men who were unidentified. A resuscitator bought by the Georgetown Rotary Club also was tried.

Young Michau was born Nov. 22, 1936, son of Mrs. Sarah Johnson Michau and the late John Alexander Michau. The family has been in Georgetown about 10 years. Herbert was to be in the sixth grade at the William C. Bynum school.

He was survived by his mother; six brothers, Lee Michau, Willie Michau, Thurman Michau, Herman Michau, and James Michau, all of Georgetown, and Jesse Michau with the Marine Corps in Jacksonville; fours sisters, Mrs. Idelle Snipes of Chester, Mrs. Estelle Hartley of Lancaster, Mrs. Lena Maye Lambert, and Mrs. Lillie Ackerman, both of Georgetown.
