Mabel Helen Stephenson
Mabel Helen Stephenson, 92, Carthage, died at 11 p.m. Thursday March 18, 2004, in McCune-Brooks Hospital, Carthage. Mrs. Stephenson was born April 17, 1911, in Nickerson, Kan., to Elmer Wheeler and Allie Green Wheeler.
She came to Carthage in 1924 from Mulberry, Kan. She married Harry Stephenson on November 9, 1942 in Miami, OK. He preceded her in death on February 16, 1962. She and her husband Harry owned and operated the What Not Cafe on Fairlawn Drive for many years. Mrs. Stephenson was a member of First Baptist Church, Carthage, the Auditorium SS Class, past president of the Business and Professional Women's Club and their Women of the Year for 1976, a former member of Mercedes Temple #63 Pythian Sisters and Joli Club, Carthage.
Survivors include a daughter, Roberta "Bobbie" Rutherford Swingle, Baytown, TX; two sons, Doyle Rutherford, Carthage, retired Colonel Terry Stephenson, Williamsburg, Va.; one sister, Pauline Wheeler, Carthage; eight grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and 15 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Harry Stephenson, three sisters, two brothers, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
Visitation will be held from 6-7 p.m. Monday March 22nd at the Knell Mortuary, Carthage. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 23, in the Knell Mortuary Chapel. Rev. Ron Franklin will officiate. Burial will be in Park Cemetery, Carthage. Memorials are suggested to the Missouri Lions Eye Bank or the First Baptist Church, Carthage.

The What Not Cafe was known for making the best Chilli in town. Their recipe was a well kept secret. Many of the townsfolk came regularly to the the cafe for a bowl of chilli, a mug of coffee and to sit and chat a while.

Mabel was first married to Robert M. Rutherford. Doyle and "Bobbie" were the children of that marriage.
