Harry T. Markwell, 85, of Sycamore Street passed away peacefully at 1:35 a.m. Tuesday, May 16, 2006, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Hospital in Carmel.

Mr. Markwell was born in Sullivan, Ill., Sept. 10, 1920, the son of Curtis and Kate Conlin Markwell. He married Martha Jeanne Cashen June 26, 1948.

He retired after 30 years of service with the U.S. Army Air Force where he served during World War II with Company A 788th Military Police BN. He was a former employee of Decatur Signal Depot in Decatur, Ill., and was a former firefighter and military policeman at Bakalar Air Force Base and Fort Benjamin Harrison.

He retired from Cummins Engine Co., where he worked for 10 years, and was a member of St. Patrick's Cathedral in Decatur, Ill., the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Moose Lodge. He enjoyed a very active life, Illinois sports and spending time with family and friends.

The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street, with the Rev. Virgil Clotfelter officiating. Calling will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and from noon until service time Saturday. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by Bartholomew County Veterans Color Guard.

Memorials may be made to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Hospital, 13500 N. Meridian St., Carmel, IN 46032; Riley Hospital for Children; or the donor's choice of charities.

Survivors include his sons, Dennis Markwell of Indianapolis and Gary Markwell of Alpharetta, Ga.; daughters, Maureen Wildfang, Sandy (Mark) Hundley, Gloria Hartwell (Jay Simmons) and Joyce Markwell, all of Columbus; grandchildren, Ryan, Melissa and Sean Wildfang, Heather and Chris Hartwell, Tosha Markwell, Greg Penrose, Drew Hundley and Gabriella Chilcoate; and great-grandchildren, Alexis, Kloie, Kaleb, Breanna, Braden and Kylie.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, George Markwell; and his wife, on June 20, 1998.
