Son of Judah & Thankful (Tuttle) Leaming, moved with his parents to Scholarie Co. NY on Feb 16, 1798, where he married Mary Tucker. They moved to LaPorte Co. IN, in 1834 where Daniel surveyed much of the land for LaPorte County. The first survey was a piece of land for his brother Judah. The saddle and surveyors chain he used are in the LaPorte County Museum.

Daniel served in the War of 1812, drafted 18 August, 1814, into Capt. Cherrytree's Division of NY Militia, and honorably discharged at Brooklyn Heights, NY, 6 Dec 1814; for which he received a land grant of 120 acres in LaPorte Co. IN.
