R. COOKE STEPHENSON

R. Cooke Stephenson, 71, of Waynesburg, R. D. 3, died at 4:20 a.m. Friday, February 21, 1969, in Greene County Memorial Hospital, Waynesburg.

He had not been in the best of health for the past few years and serious only the last three days.

Mr. Stephenson was born October 8, 1897, at Frankford Springs, Beaver County, the son of Larry and Bella Cooke Stephenson.

All of his life was spent in the Waynesburg vicinity where he was a member of the Washington Street United Methodist Church, the Men's Bible Class, the Greene County Fox Chasers Association and had served for several years as a Franklin Township school director.

He retired in 1962, as chief engineer of the Carnegia Gas Company near Waynesburg, and was also engaged in farming and stock raising.

Mr. Stephenson belonged to the BPOE Lodge 757, Waynesburg, the East Franklin Grange and the F and AM Lodge 153, Waynesburg.

Surviving are his wife Mary Scott Stephenson, whom he married June 26, 1915; five daughters, Gwendolyn, wife of Willis Cowell, of Perry, Mich.; Lucille, wife of Forney Phillips, of Waynesburg, R. D. 4; Jean, wife of George Spray, of Girard, Ohio; Sara, wife of James Varner, Cortland, Ohio, and Mildred, wife of James Maize, of Waynesburg; one son, Kenneth Stephenson, stationed with the U. S. Navy at Norfolk, Va.; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister, Jane, wife of Lloyd Boone, of Waynesburg, R. D. 3; three brothers: M. M. Stephenson and Audley, both of Waynesburg, and William G. Stephenson, of Washington, and several nieces and nephews.

One son and one brother, Edwin, are deceased.

Funeral services were held Monday with burial in Greene County Memorial Park.
