HERMAN SCHILLER

Herman Schiller d. 7 Nov 1952, Cedarburg and Erna d. 6 June 1966, Port Washington, Wisconsin. Both are buried in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Cedarburg, Wisconsin.

SCHILLER FAMILY

Herman had three sisters and three brothers; Martha, Lottie, Ida, John (who worked in logging mills and was killed while crossing a bridge operating a steam engine), August "Gust" (a carpenter), and Fred (a farmer). His father, Carl, immigrated to the United States in 1881, and worked in the stone quarries in Waukesha, Wisconsin until he could afford the family farm located between Pittsville and Vesper. Their farm was the first in the area to be constructed of planed boards from a local mill.

OCCUPATION

Herman was a farmer between 1913 and 1917. In 1917, a roadmaster for the railroad hired Herman to help in the construction of the railroad in Illinois. With few roads, they travelled by handcar. Part of the construction Herman worked on included the track to the Great Lakes Naval Station. The railroad he worked for in Illinios was called the E. J. & E. (Elgin, Joliet, & Eastern Railroad). By 1920, Herman took another job in Green Bay and spent several years working for the Soo Railroad. For about a year during 1923, Herman worked for the Cedarburg Power Co., Cedarburg, Wisconsin in the power plant. Finally in 1924 Herman was hired as a foreman with the Milwaukee Railroad where he reamained until he retired.

RESIDENCE

After Herman and Erna were married, they moved to Vesper and farmed for a few years. By 1917, they quit the farm and moved to Cedarburg. After Herman took a job with the railroad, they moved to Lithin near Diamond Lake about half-way between Joliet and Elgin, Illinois. There were no roads in the area then. Following her husbands railroad career, they moved to Green Bay in 1920. Then in 1923 moved back to Cedarburg for about a year, living in a stone house on Water Street, one block directly west of Albert and Frieda Uhlig's home on Mequon Street. Between 1924 and 1933 they lived in the Miske home on Western Avenue, two doors west of Herman and Irma Uhlig's home. From 1933 til 1939, they lived in the Effenheim home across the street. Eventually with the help of their son John, they purchased the Immanuel Lutheran Teacher home next to the streetcar tracks for $3000 ($15 down and $30 per month).
