Mrs. Elizabeth Eva Backert Roth, 91, a resident of Elkhart for 35 years, whose home was at 1138 Cedar, died at 8 o'clock this morning [October 11, 1943] in the home of a son, Leo J. Backert, 1106 E. Beardsley. She was taken to the son's home after she became ill 2 months ago.

The body, now at the A.G. Zelle Funeral Home, 403 W. Franklin, will be taken to the Cedar Street address at 2 p.m. Tuesday, and friends will be received there until the hour of the funeral service, which will be conducted at St. Vincent Catholic Church by the Rev. Edward G. Werling at 9 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Mrs. Roth was a member of St. Vincent's Church and of its Rosary society, and also of the Ladies' auxiliary to the Spanish War Veterans.

The deceased, who was born July 28,1852 in Germany, was brought to America at the age of 9 years by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Adam Seebold. They crossed the Atlantic on a sailing vessel, which required 2-1/2 months to make the voyage.

She was the widow of Adam Backert at the time of her marriage in 1907 to Frank X. Roth, who died 11 years later.

Surviving are the following children, all by the first marriage; Leo Backert and his twin, Louis J. Backert, and Mrs. T.L. Wilson of Elkhart, Mrs. George A. Kern of Louisville, KY, and Mrs. J.L. Strickland of Clifton, NJ.

Three sons preceded her in death, Frank, John and George Backert. All five sons served in World War I, and one, George, also served in the Spanish-American War.

There are 16 grandchildren, including 3 grandsons now in service, and 21 great-grandchildren.
