ELKHART INDIANA TRUTH OBITUARY – 11/23/1938
George J. Backert, 60, a retired sergeant in the U.S. Army who saw service in the Spanish-American War, died in the Elkhart General Hospital at 10 o'clock Tuesday night. Ill from uremia, he was taken to the hospital last Saturday from the home of his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Roth, 1138 Cedar Street. The body was returned to that home from the Zelle Mortuary this afternoon. The funeral service will be held at 9 a.m. Friday at St. Vincent Catholic Church, with burial in the parish cemetery. Surviving beside the mother, who formerly was Mrs. Adam (Sebold) Backert, are the following brothers and sisters: Louis J. at the above address, and Leo J. of 1106 E. Beardsley Avenue; Mrs. Theodore Wilson of 616 Liberty Street; Mrs. John Strickland of Cliffton, NJ; and Mrs. George Kern of Louisville, KY. Sergt. Backert, born June 5, 1878 in Louisville, enlisted in the regular army at the age of 16 and received final discharge in 1920 after 26 years of service. He came to Elkhart 12 years ago from Highlands, NJ. He was a member of Jones-Darling Camp of Spanish War Veterans and at one time held membership in the American Legion.
