in 1848 Melvin Graduated the Univ. of Vermont. 1849 & 50 was the Principal of the Peoples Acadamy in Morristown,VT . 1851-3 taught school in GA & AL. 1853 bought the "Courier" newspaper. 28 Mar 1861 enl CSA 8th GA Captain wounded at Gettysburg. 1864 Served as Rome representative to the GA state Leg. until the end of the war. Then went back to running the newspaper until he retired.
