(Colquitt's)

Andrew J. Addison
Enlistment: 3 April 1861, Little Rock, Pulaski County Arkansas
Discharged: 3 December 1862, Cleveland, Bradley County, Tennessee

Additional notes from the Doctors Statement after receiving a severe gunshot wound to the leg---
A. J. Addison
20 years of age
Five foot and four inches high
Bright Blue Eyes
Dark Hair
Occupation: Farmer
(It was common for young men to misrepresent their age when joining the service. Jack was born in 1844 which made him about age 17 and not age 20).

Some background notes:

Andrew Jackson Addison, Jr. went by the nickname of "Jack". His father, Andrew Jackson Addison, Sr. went by the nickname of "General". Elizabeth Addison, mother of Jack, had been previously married to a Mr. Long and a Henry Hemphill before marriage to General.

After military service Jack married a woman named America and had five children.(There is no information on the parents, roots, maiden name or date and location of marriage to America. Based on Census records, it appears that she was born ca 1849 in North Carolina and that they married around 1865). The first three children of Jack and America lived to adulthood. They were Samantha S. "Mattie", Elizabeth T. "Lizzie", and Martha Diane "Mollie" Addison. The two youngest children were a twin son and daughter named Belmont and Mary who were born in 1873. America died possibly of childbirth complications after the birth of the twins in Desha County, Arkansas. Both twins died in early childhood.

According to Pension records information, Jack married for the second time to Margaret Aleatha (maiden name and background unknown--only that she was born in 1855) on 5 January 1876 in Greene County, Arkansas and relocated to Cherokee County, Texas. Margaret had no biological children of her own but was a good loving parent and grandparent to Jack's children from his first marriage.

Jack and family were recorded on the Federal Census from 1850-1920. The locations are listed here in order: Izard Co., Ark., Marion Co., Ark., Oregon Co., Mo., Lamar Co., Tx., Chickasaw Nation, I.T. (Carter Co.), Okla., and Milam Co., Texas. The family lived in Cherokee County for brief periods in 1876 and later between 1910-1920.
