Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Served in the Civil War first as a Captain in the 2nd Michigan Volunteer Infantry, then as Colonel and commander of the 12th Michigan Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on October 24, 1865 for "faithful services during the war". He served as Michigan's Lieutenant Governor from 1867 to 1869, and as its Attorney General from 1869 to 1873.
