COKEVILLE, Wyo. - Beloved mother, Joyce Whitney, passed away January 7, 2011, at the age of 81.
She was born December 8, 1929, a little after 8 a.m. in a two-room log cabin, two miles north of Cokeville. Since they did not have a phone, her dad, Charles LeRoy Whitney, had gone to call the doctor on the neighbor's phone. Figuring it would be awhile, he stayed for breakfast. By the time he and the doctor arrived, Joyce's mother, Thelma Pearl Reed, had already given birth to her.
She had a normal, Depression-era childhood. Her happiest memories were the summers she spent in the mountains north of Cokeville with her mother and brother, Ike, where they homesteaded 640 acres. At age 14, her parents bought the ranch at Border. She loved going to the dances around the valley with her best friend, Joy Nuttal.
After graduating from Cokeville High School in 1948, she attended Utah State University, graduating from that institution with a degree in elementary education in 1952.
In October of that year, she married Elmer Hagloch. Four children blessed this union. She spent the next 20 years following her Air Force husband around the United States, which was hard on the marriage and they divorced in 1977.
She was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many callings, her favorite being ward librarian. She served a mission for the church in 1981 to Connecticut.
She loved to read and was always learning. For many years, she volunteered at the VA Hospital in Salt Lake City, sharing her love of music and dancing with the patients there. Her greatest accomplishment was raising honorable, faithful children who remained close to her, each other and the church.
She is survived by her children: Shirleen (Lee) Hunter, Gene (Sharon) Hagloch, Brent (Michelle) Hagloch and Rhonda (Mike) Stoker; 17 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; her sister, Zella (Cal) Price; sister-in-law, Rochelle Whitney; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents: Charles and Thelma Whitney; and her brother, Ike Whitney.
Funeral services will be Saturday, January 15 at 11:30 a.m., with a viewing for one hour prior to services at the Cokeville LDS Church, under the direction of Matthews Mortuary, with Bishop Todd Dayton officiating.
Interment will be in the Cokeville Cemetery.
