John R. Judd

John R. Judd, 77, 5779 Wilderness Lane, Bancroft, president of Bancroft State Bank, as well as Hometown Insurance Agency and Judd Realty in Bancroft, died Monday, April 4, 2005, at St. Michael's Hospital in Stevens Point.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Taylor Funeral Home in Wisconsin Rapids, with Pastor Robert Krell officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery in Bancroft.

Visitation will be at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and again from 9:30 a.m. Saturday until the services. Military rites will be provided by American Legion Yonke Christensen Post 533 at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

A memorial is being established in his name.

Mr. Judd was born March 14, 1928, in Bancroft, a son of the late Jesse and Ruth (Loomer) Judd. He graduated from Bancroft Grade School and Bancroft High School.

He attended Wisconsin State University in Stevens Point, where he played on the football team and graduated in 1949 as a teacher. He received the Collins Award from Wisconsin State University-Stevens Point in 1949 for having the highest grade point average in math for four years.

He taught math in the Phillips High School.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War for two years.

After service he returned to continue teaching in Phillips. He moved to Wisconsin Rapids in 1953.

He was married to Jean Ann Hofschild on June 13, 1953, in Wisconsin Rapids.

He taught math at Lincoln High School in Wisconsin Rapids from 1953 to 1956.

He received an industrial engineering degree and worked for Owens Illinois and helped set up a plant in Kansas City.

He came back to Bancroft in 1959 and worked with his father at the Bancroft State Bank. He became president of the Bancroft State Bank in 1971. Along with being the bank president, he owned Judd Insurance Agency and Judd Realty, and he was owner and president of those at the time of his death. The bank now has branches in Kellner, Saratoga, Hancock and Plainfield, and the insurance agency now is known as Hometown Insurance Agency with offices in Bancroft and Hancock. He also was a stockholder and member of the Board of Directors of Farmers and Merchants Bank in Rudolph.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Bancroft, American Legion Yonke Christensen Post 533 of Bancroft, 40 et 8 and various investment clubs.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Jo Ella (Dennis) Broton, Elcho, and Jill Anne (Christopher) Kollock and Jan Rae (William) Weisenbeck, both of Bancroft; one brother, Winston (June "Bette"), Jefferson; two sisters, Marjorie (Ednie) Kiddie, Palm Harbor, Fla., and Nancy (Curt) Wolle, Plover; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Eldred, Douglas, Calvin and Barton; and one grandson.
