He landed his first job with a farmer who lived in a wooded section of the country once jumping with Indians--and the Dearborn Massacre was still fresh in the minds of the populace.
Today, civilization, such as we know it, has given the site of that farmland a name--Clark Street and Bryn Mawr Avenue, Chicago.
Anton's life in Niles Township began about 1892. In that year, he heard of a farmer named Henry Heinz who wanted to sell out. Anton dug deep into his tomato can and came up with $2,000.00. From Nick Mann, his former employer, he borrowed another $2,000.00 and with the $4,000.00 he purchased 10 acres of farm-land at the Northeast corner of Gross Point and Niles Center. He struggled for 20 years before he was able to pay off the $2,000.00 debt to Nick Mann.
About 1928 Anton sold his farm and retired, living out the rest of his life in the country he grew to love as his own.
Married May 11, 1886 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.
