Charles James Dubois was born in Wyoming County, New York, October 1, 1840 and passed away at his home here at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday February 12, 1918 after a brief illness of about a month. For the past two years he has been in failing health. He was the son of Abraham Dubois and Martha Buckaloo, his father being a tanner of NY state. He came to IA with his parents before the Civil War and at McGregor enlisted in the service. He met Miss Elizabeth McCall of Bloomington and afterwards she became his wife. After the war they were married in Macon, MO on Dec 16, 1869 by Rev. J. N. Wright. Four children blessed this union, all of whom are still living. The are: Elmer S. Dubois of New Castle, PA, Count Dubois of Kansas City, Jesse K. Dubois of Cleveland, OH and Charles R. Dubois of St. Joseph, MO. He has built railroads all over the country and laid out the town of El Reno, Oklahoma and also the town of Dubois, Nebraska which still bears his name. He built the K. and K. C. Road, the St. Louis, Keokuk, and Northwestern road, the St. Louis and Hannibal, a short line road and the G.F. & R. road. He was an engineer and manager of the Littleton, Carrolton and Western Railroad and was chief locating engineer of the Rock Island. He worked under John R. Bliss of New York, the great railroad magnate, and locally engineered the sewer systems of Kirksville, Hannibal, Trenton, and Brookfield. He also engineered the interurban road from Sioux City out through South Dakota. Funeral services were held here this afternoon at the residence at 3 o'clock conducted by Rev. Charles F. Edwards of the St. James Episcpal church.
