Mrs. Phillips was the daughter of Thomas, and Nancy (Skidmore) Scott. She married Moses J. Phillips (1817-1887); son of Benjamin, and Phoebe Walker, on January 22, 1844. Mrs. Phillips served as a spy and courier for the Confederacy during the Civil War. An interesting story about Margaret and her family's Civil War exploits can be found in the Randolph County Historical Society's 1933 Magazine of History and Biography, number seven, pages 30-33. She was a sister to Crawford Scott (1816-1893). Crawford served as a guide to Union forces during the Civil War. He was also the first native of Randolph County to promote the commercial development of coal lands.
