George W. Adams was born in Prairieton Township just west of Moweaqua, Illinois. George William, who was nicknamed Bill, was the fourth son of Ellington and Elizabeth (Gorden) Adams. He was a brother to Isom Adams , Joseph Adams, Randall Adams, James Robert Adams, Martin V. Adams, John C. Adams, Rachael (Rice) Adams, Martha (Bramblett) Adams and Lucy Adams. He was the husband of Lucy Ann Northcutt who he married on November 24, 1858 and, after a divorce, Olive Georgia (Brown) who he married on October 31, 1875. George and Lucy had five children; James B. Adams (who died in infancy), Charles Owen Adams (who married Nettie Radford), Wilbur D. Adams (who married Maud Winter), Elizabeth Willett Adams (who married Wesley P. Beaumont) and Salena Adams (who married Sidney Dedman). George was successful in farming and livestock on the farm adjacent to the Adams-Gorden Cemetery where his father Ellington had started the family farm in the 1830s. He died at age 55 at the farm after an accident while shipping livestock. His oldest son Charles inherited the farm.
