LARUSSELL, MO — Richard "Dick" Sundy, age 85, of La Russell, Mo., went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011, while at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin. Dick was born on Jan. 29, 1925, in Reeds, Mo., son of the late Ed Sundy and Marie (Smith) Sundy. He had attended Reeds Grade School and Sarcoxie High School before being inducted in the United States Army on Aug. 11, 1944 at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. He was a veteran of World War II and was honorably discharged from the military on June 29, 1946. Dick was very proud of his country and had been a member of the Red Oak American Legion Post No. 588. He also enjoyed fishing, gardening, traveling with his family, crossword and jigsaw puzzles and playing dominoes with his good buddies in La Russell. Dick and his family attend the First Baptist Church of Avilla. During his working years, Dick worked for over 25 years for Chapman & Follmer in Avilla and then for another 25 years at ConAgra in La Russell. He retired at the age of 80. On Jan. 14, 1950, in Bentonville, Ark., Dick and Lora Lee Castor were united in marriage. They were blessed with over 60 years of togetherness. To this union, four children were born. Dick is survived by his wife, Lora Lee, of the home; four daughters, Donna Giles and husband, Ross, of Golden City, Mo., Glenda Alberty and husband, Terry, of La Russell, Janice Tipton and husband, Tom, of Canton, Ga., and Gail Irwin and husband, Tony, of Carthage, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; four nephews; and a host of extended family and friends. Preceding him in death were his parents; and one brother, Frank Sundy. Funeral services for Mr. Sundy will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 10, 2011, at the First Baptist Church of Avilla with Reverend Walter Horne officiating. Interment and military honors will follow at the Sarcoxie Cemetery. A visitation will be held at the church from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Sunday. Memorial contributions have been requested to the Palliative Care Center in care of the Freeman Foundation, 1102 W. 32nd, Joplin, MO 64804. Arrangements are under the personal care and direction of Housh-Goodwin Funeral Home, Sarcoxie.
